David
Schmoll
March 22, 1960 – May 2, 2026
We celebrate the life of David Schmoll, age 66, of Newark, Ohio, who passed away peacefully in Nyack, New York, on May 2nd after a short yet tenuous battle with lung cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, extraordinary music and lasting memories.
David was born on March 22, 1960 in Columbus, Ohio, to Jim and Shirley Schmoll. From an early age, he showed a passion for music and performing. As a young child, he would take his record player to neighbors’ homes, play a record and sing for them. By the time he went to kindergarten, he was able to play the songs on the piano that they sang in class. He began playing in bands as a young teenager and continued to perform throughout his life. He specialized in musical comedy for over three decades, showcasing his unique blend of musical talent and comedic sensibility. He served as Musical Director for the comedy institutions of Second City Cleveland and Boom Chicago in Amsterdam, becoming an unmatched musical improviser. Over the years, he composed and produced music for major networks and platforms including NBC, Peacock, TLC, Broadway Video, AOK Digital and FOX ADHD. In addition to his work in comedy and television, he expanded into the neoclassical genre, releasing a collection of atmospheric, emotionally resonant solo piano pieces. His most recent and most cherished accomplishment was having composed the music for the off Broadway show, “Bigfoot, The Musical”, which had a very successful eight week run in Manhattan.
David was known by many of his friends as “Schmoll”, “Schmoo” or “Dr. Schmoll”. But beyond any title, David will be remembered for his kindness, humor, generosity with his time and talent, and his gentle soul.
David is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Vickie Schmoll, Sheri Armentrout (Rick), Mindi Bhatt (Himanshu) and Kevin Schmoll (Michelle), as well as several nieces, nephews and great nephews, an aunt and several cousins. David had close relationships with many dear friends whose lives were touched by his presence, but was so appreciative specifically to Ken, Steven, Amber and Kelsi in New York for providing love, care and support during his final months. David is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Shirley Schmoll and uncle, Loyd Thomas.
A celebration of life will be held in the near future for friends and family to honor his life, share stories and enjoy his music.
